Rich in History
Built in 1931 as the headquarters of Kansas City Power & Light Company, this 36-story iconic landmark was known as the tallest building in Missouri for 50 years. Sparing no expense at the time of completion, this building boasts several signature features, including an exterior clad in Indiana limestone, a 21-foot exterior lantern equipped with floodlights portraying flame-like effects, a two-story grand lobby space with art deco ornamentation, marble, and granite interior finishes with custom plaster moldings and metalwork.
The large display windows along 14th and Baltimore were originally designed to showcase the latest electronic devices and appliances, illustrating the use of electricity. The two-story interior auditorium known today as The Grand Hall at Power & Light was originally utilized to conduct demonstrations on how electricity could improve lives. Today, it is recognized as one of the finest examples of art deco architecture in the United States and remains the most recognizable and iconic silhouette in the Kansas City skyline, and is now home to the Power & Light Apartments and the Kansas City event space, The Grand Hall.
